Magherafelt, Londonderry

Magherafelt is a town in County Londonderry. It is within the townland of Town Parks Of Magherafelt, in the civil parish of Magherafelt. Magherafelt has been documented as a town since 1425. An earlier name for the area was Teach Fíolta (i.e. Fíolta's monastic house), suggesting there was a monastic settlement here under the leadership of Fíolta. The Salters Company of London was granted the surrounding lands in the 17th century as part of the Plantation. Subsequently, the town began to take on its current shape with a central diamond forming the heart of the town. The Bridewell, on Broad Street, previously housed the town's court-house and gaol. Magherafelt is the biggest town in the south of County Londonderry and is the social, economic and political hub of the area. The town is within the council area of Mid Ulster.
