Maghera Church and Round Tower, Down

Maghera Church and Round Tower is a ruined mediæval church and a ruined stone round tower, located in the civil parish of Maghera, County Down. The site comprises a circular graveyard within which are the ruins of a mediæval church, possibly 13th century, and the 18ft high stump of a stone round tower which possibly dates top the 10th century. In the graveyard are several simple cross-carved stones and a fragment of a 13th-century grave slab. Excavations of the site have discovered intense activity in Early Christian times. The current parish church, built in 1825, lies alongside the monument. The monument is in the care of the Department for Communities. The monument is within the council area of Newry, Mourne and Down.
