Maghera, Londonderry
Maghera is a small town, located at the foot of the Glenshane Pass in County Londonderry. It is within the townlands of Craigadick, Largantogher, Moneymore and Tamnymullan, in the civil parish of Maghera. The settlement dates back at least to the church founded by St Lurach in the 6th century. The present day ruins of Maghera Old Church are on the same site and date from the 10th century. The area was significant enough to be the seat of the Derry diocese from 1150 to 1254. Following the Irish Rebellion of 1641, the lands of the parish were divided among London livery companies, and Scottish settlers arrived. Charles Thomson, a Founding Father of the United States, was born in Maghera in 1729. The town is within the council area of Mid Ulster.
