Lynton, Devon
Lynton is a small town on the Exmoor coast of Devon. Lynton stands at the top of a gorge above the seaside village of Lynmouth, to which it is connected by the Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway (opened 1890). Historically, Lynton was isolated, relying on sheep farming, fishing, and smuggling. The 19th century saw Lynton became a tourist destination, with many Victorian villas and hotels constructed. Lynton Town Hall (1900) was designed by Read and Macdonald in the Tudor Revival style. It was financed by publisher and politician Sir George Newnes. The Church of St Mary (C of E), overlooking the sea, has a 13th-century tower. The town is within the council area of North Devon (Devon).
