Luton Hoo, Bedfordshire

Luton Hoo is a country house and estate near Luton, Bedfordshire. A family called de Hoo occupied a manor house on the site for four centuries, until the death of Thomas Hoo in 1455. The present house was built by the 3rd Earl of Bute to the designs of the neoclassical architect Robert Adam from 1767. Capability Brown enlarged and redesigned the park. In about 1830, the 2nd Marquess of Bute transformed the house to the designs of the architect Robert Smirke. The house is within the council area of Central Bedfordshire.
