Lurgan, Armagh

Lurgan is a town in County Armagh. It is within the townlands of Lurgan, Aghnacloy, Tannaghmore South, Shankill, Toberhewny, Knocknashane, Ballyblagh, Demesne, Drumnamoe, Dougher, Derry, Tannaghmore North and Taghnevan, in the civil parish of Shankill. The town was established during the Plantation by landowner William Brownlow. The Brownlow family later oversaw the development of the linen industry. The textile industry remained a main employer in the town until the late 20th century. The town saw major growth from the 1960s, notably to its south and north, as part of the developments associated with Craigavon new town. Whilst the intention had been to create a new 'city' of Craigavon, Lurgan has retained a separate identity. Lurgan Town Hall (1868) was designed by William Raffles Brown in the Italianate style. Brownlow House dates from 1833. Lurgan town centre is distinctive for its wide main street, Market Street, which is dominated at one end by Shankill (CofI) Parish Church. The town is within the council area of Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon.
