Lower Woodburn, Antrim
Lower Woodburn is a former hamlet that is now an urban area in Carrickfergus, County Antrim. It is within the townland of West Division, in the civil parish of Carrickfergus. The hamlet, which lay along the Shore Road to the west of Carrickfergus, was the site of Gallow's Green, a site of public execution. It lay south of the estate of Woodburn Lodge, later known as The Mount. The estate contained the ruins of Woodburn Abbey, founded by John de Courcy around 1183 and dissolved in 1542. The area became the site of a Courtaulds factory from 1950-1981. Since the factory's closure the entire area has seen massive redevelopment as a retail and industrial area. Almost nothing of the original hamlet has survived. The area is within the council area of Mid and East Antrim.
