Lower Falls, Antrim
Lower Falls is an urban area in west Belfast, County Antrim. It is within the townland of Town Parks, in the civil parish of Shankill. The area lies along Divis Street in the city centre and then along the Falls Road out to the Grosvenor Road/Springfield Road intersection. The area was developed from the mid 19th century, with many linen mills and terraced housing for their workers. The area was largely settled by Catholics who formed a close-knit community. The area has a long history of tension and conflict with the nearby unionist Shankill area. The riots in the area in 1969 and the response to them are often seen as the starting point of The Troubles. The area is known for its many murals of the republican cause. St Peter's Cathedral was consecrated in 1866 and dedicated the cathedral church of Down and Connor in 1986. Lower Falls is within the council area of Belfast.
