Londonderry, Londonderry
Londonderry (also often known as Derry) is a city, standing on both banks of the River Foyle in County Londonderry. That part of the city west of the Foyle (the Cityside) lies within the townlands of Londonderry, Ballymagowan, Edenballymore, Creggan, Pennyburn, Cloughglass, Spring Town, Ballymagrorty, Ballynashallog, Shantallow and Ballynagalliagh, in the civil parish of Templemore. That part of the city east of the Foyle (the Riverside) lies within the townlands of Clooney, Gobnascale, Altnagelvin, Lisnagelvin, Kilfinnan, Caw, Lisneal, Ardnabrocky, Lower Tullyally and Ardlough, in the civil parish of Clondermot. A monastery was founded here in the 6th century, reputedly by St Columba. Though destroyed by Viking raids, the mediæval cathedral of Templemore occupied the site until destroyed during the conflicts of the 16th century. The English established a garrison at Derry around 1600 and a trading settlement around 1603. From around 1613, a new walled city was built by the Irish Society, a consortium of the livery companies of the City of London. The city was granted a Royal Charter by James I in 1613. The charter changed the name of the city to 'Londonderry' in recognition of the contribution of the livery companies in the city's re-foundation. This charter also established County Londonderry. Despite the official name, the city has continued to be known as Derry to many, though since the 1960s the choice of name has become a source of controversy. The modern city preserves the 17th-century layout of four main streets radiating from a central Diamond to four gateways – Bishop's Gate, Ferryquay Gate, Shipquay Gate and Butcher's Gate. The city is within the council area of Derry City and Strabane.
