London, Middlesex

London is a city in Middlesex. The Roman established "Londinium" around AD 43, the city becoming a major commercial centre until its abandonment in the 5th century. Alfred the Great began the resettlement of the old Roman walled area in 886. The city has been incorporated since the Saxon period. Numerous royal charters over the centuries, including in 1067 by William I, have confirmed and extended the citizens' rights. The City of London Corporation continues to form the local authority and also takes responsibility for supporting the financial services industry. Within the city are the Bank of England, the Royal Exchange, the London Stock Exchange, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Guildhall, Mansion House and the College of Arms. The city is often known as "the City" or "The Square Mile", often to distinguish the ancient city itself from the far wider area which is now commonly known as 'London'. The city is within the council area of City of London.
