Llantwit Major, Glamorgan

Llantwit Major is a small seaside town in Glamorgan. The town grew up around a monastery founded in the 5th century by Saint Illtud as a centre of learning. David, Samson of Dol, Paul Aurelian, Gildas, Tudwal, Baglan and King Maelgwn Gwynedd are said to have studied at the Cor Tewdws, the divinity school, often called "the oldest university in the world". In the 20th century, the modern town developed rapidly to accommodate Royal Air Force personnel from the St Athan base. The mediæval cobbled streets and buildings of the 15th and 16th centuries remain. Colhugh Beach is a popular surfing venue and has the remnants of an Iron Age fort. The town is within the council area of The Vale of Glamorgan.
