Llantarnam, Monmouthshire

Llantarnam (known in Welsh as Llanfihangel Llantarnam) is a suburban village situated to the south of Cwmbran in Monmouthshire. Llantarnam Abbey was a Cistercian abbey from the 12th century until the Dissolution. It was rebuilt as a country house in the 16th century and in 1834-36 rebuilt in Tudor Revival style to the designs of Thomas Henry Wyatt. Since 1946 it has again BEEN a monastic institution, in the hands of the Sisters of St Joseph of Annecy. St Michael's Church (C in W) dates from the early 12th century. The village is sometimes now considered to be a southern suburb of Cwmbran. It is within the council area of Torfaen.
