Liverpool, Lancashire
Liverpool is a major city in Lancashire, standing on the eastern side of the Mersey Estuary. Liverpool was founded as a borough by King John in 1207 and was granted city status in 1880. Its growth as a major port was paralleled by the expansion of the city throughout the Industrial Revolution. Its status as a port city attracted a diverse population from a wide range of cultures. The city is closely associated with the arts, especially music; the popularity of the Beatles helping to make it a major tourist destination. Albert Dock, constructed in 1846, comprises the largest single collection of Grade I listed buildings anywhere in Britain. The Pier Head is the site of the Royal Liver Building, the Cunard Building and the Port of Liverpool Building – collectively known as The Three Graces. The commercial district around Castle Street has many fine building including the Bank of England Building (1848), the Oriel Chambers (1864) and Liverpool Town Hall (1754). Liverpool Cathedral, built on St James's Mount, is the largest cathedral and religious building in Britain. The Roman Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral of Liverpool (1967), designed by Sir Frederick Gibberd, lies half a mile to the north. The city is within the council area of Liverpool.
