Limehouse, Middlesex
Limehouse is a metropolitan district that forms a part of the East End of London, lying on the River Thames between Shadwell and the Isle of Dogs in south-east Middlesex. Limehouse became a significant port in the late mediæval period, from when shipbuilding, ship chandlering and rope making were established. Regents Canal Dock opened in 1820. The area saw substantial redevelopment from the 1980s, the former docks becoming the Limehouse Basin marina, but retains many of its historic streets and buildings. St Anne's Limehouse (1730) is regarded as one of Nicholas Hawksmoor's finest works. The area is within the council area of Tower Hamlets.
