Lich Way, Devon

Lich Way (aka Lych Way) is an ancient, probably early mediæval, routeway from Bellever to Lydford across Dartmoor, Devon. In mediæval times the people of the small farmsteads in the surrounding area had to make the long journey across the moor to bury their dead at Lydford parish church. The word 'lych' has its origins in Old English, meaning 'body'. The routeway is within the council area of West Devon (Devon).
