Leytonstone, Essex
Leytonstone is a suburban town in Essex. It was part of the ancient parish of Leyton in the Becontree hundred of Essex. The first documented evidence of settlement is from the 14th century, describing a hamlet at 'Leyton-atte-stone'; a reference to the Roman milestone located within the area. The hamlet developed along Leytonstone High Road, part of an ancient highway from Epping to London. The Green Man public house dates from the 17th century. Leytonstone saw significant suburban development from the 1870s. The town is the birthplace (1899) of film director Sir Alfred Hitchcock. The town is within the council area of Waltham Forest.
