Levens Hall, Westmorland

Levens Hall is an Elizabethan mansion in Westmorland. The first house on the site was a pele tower built by the Redman family in around 1350. Much of the present building dates from the Elizabethan era, when the Bellingham family extended the house. The house contains fine panelling and plasterwork, period furniture, Cordova leather wall coverings, paintings by Rubens, Lely and Cuyp and the earliest English patchwork. Levens has a celebrated and large topiary garden, which was first created in 1694 by the French gardener Guillaume Beaumont, the gardener of King James II and the designer of the grounds at Hampton Court. The park and gardens have survived remarkably intact. In December 2021 the gardens were featured in the TV series Gardeners' World. It is currently the family home of the Bagots, whose family have been in continual ownership for over 400 years. It is within the council area of Westmorland and Furness.
