Leiston Abbey, Suffolk
Leiston Abbey is a ruined Premonstratensian monastery near Leiston, Suffolk. The abbey was founded at Minsmere in 1182 for 26 canons of the Premonstratensian order by Ranulph de Glanville, Chief Justiciary to Henry II. The abbey moved to this inland site in 1363. After the Abbey was surpressed (1537), it became a farm, the farmhouse being built into the abbey walls. A Georgian frontage was later added. Leiston Abbey is considered one of the most completely preserved examples of a Premonstratensian monastery in England. The ruined walls of the church and conventual buildings form the core of the monument. The monument is within the council area of East Suffolk (Suffolk).
