Leigh, Lancashire
Leigh is a town in Lancashire. Spinning and weaving developed from the 17th century, with cotton mills being built from the 1830s. Mining was also an important industry. The present-day economy is based around retail. St Mary the Virgin church, dating from at least the 13th century, is built from hammer-dressed sandstone in the Gothic Revival Perpendicular style. Leigh Town Hall (1907) was built in the Edwardian Baroque style. The town is within the council area of Wigan.
