Leicester Square, Middlesex
Leicester Square in an urban locality in Westminster, Middlesex, forming part of the West End of London. Robert Sidney, 2nd Earl of Leicester purchased the land in 1630 and built Leicester House in 1635. The square was laid out to the south of Leicester House and developed in the 1670s. Originally a gentrified residential area, from the late 18th century it became the centre of entertainment which it has remained. The Alhambra Theatre (1854-1936) dominated the east side of the square. It was replaced by the Art Deco style Odeon Cinema (1937), which hosts numerous film premieres.
