Leicester Abbey, Leicestershire

Leicester Abbey is a ruined Augustinian abbey in Leicester, Leicestershire. The abbey was founded in the 12th century by the Robert de Beaumont, 2nd Earl of Leicester. It grew to become the wealthiest religious establishment in Leicestershire. Cardinal Thomas Wolsey died here in 1530. The abbey was dissolved in 1538 and was quickly demolished. After the Dissolution, a mansion (later known as Cavendish House) was built at the site. By 1928 the house was in ruins and the land was given to the City of Leicester by Lord Dysart. The area was subsequently opened to the public as Abbey Park. The monument is within the council area of Leicester.
