Lee, Kent

Lee is a former village (Lee Green) that is now a suburban area to the east of Lewisham and south of Blackheath, in Kent. Lee was an ancient manor and subsequent parish in the Blackheath hundred of Kent. A hamlet grew up at Lee Green. The village and parish saw significant development in the 19th century as it became a retreat for City merchants and as housing was built for their servants. From 1900-1965, Lee ancient parish was the basis, along with that of Lewisham, for Lewisham metropolitan borough. The Manor House (built in 1772) is the third to occupy the site. It is now a library and the grounds a public park. Pentland House dates from 1685. The present St Margaret's Church dates from 1841. The area is within the council area of Lewisham.
