Langport, Somerset

Langport is a historic market town and river port lying on the River Parrett in Somerset. The town has Saxon origins and grew to become a prosperous mediæval river port and commercial hub. It was awarded its first charter in 1562 by Elizabeth I. The Battle of Langport (1645) was a major victory for the Parliamentarians. The town was the birthplace of Stuckey’s Bank, founded in 1770. Walter Bagehot, the famous Victorian constitutionalist, was born here in 1826. The Hanging Chapel is a 13th-century chantry chapel built atop the mediæval east gate of the town. The Church of All Saints (C of E) has 12th-century origins. Langport Town Hall (1732) is in the neoclassical style. The Great Bow Bridge across the Parrett, dating from 1841, replaced a 31-arch mediæval bridge. The town is within the council area of Somerset.
