Langley Hall, Durham
Langley Hall was a fortified Tudor house in County Durham. It is situated about three miles north-west of the city of Durham. Henry Scrope built a huge fortified hall on the site, complete with a moat, during the 1500s. The Scropes remained in residence at Langley until the 1750s after which it deteriorated and eventually passed to the Lambton family, though by this time it was being used as a farm. The site is inaccessible and its walls are in danger of falling to the ground but it is all that remains of the Langley of long ago. The neighbouring village of Langley Park, which takes its name from the Langley of times past, only came into being in the 1870s. The ruins of the hall are Grade II listed but it remains relatively unknown and very little remains today. It is within the council area of County Durham.
