Landport is a urban area in Portsmouth, Hampshire. It lies on Portsea island to the north-east of Old Portmouth. Landport forms the city-centre of modern-day Portsmouth, and includes Portsmouth Guildhall, the civic centre and Portsmouth and Southsea Station. The area is named from the Landport Gate into Portsmouth (1760), though a settlement, sometimes known as Halfway Houses, existed prior to that. This settlement expanded as an overspill from Old Portsmouth from the late 18th century along the road from Landport Gate to Kingston, being known as Landport by the early 19th century. Landport is within the council area of Portsmouth.
