Lambeth, Surrey
Lambeth is a metropolitan district and ancient parish on the south bank of the River Thames in Surrey. The archbishops of Canterbury were lords of the manor of Lambeth from c.1190. Archbishop Hubert Walter created Lambeth Palace in 1197, the official London residence of the archbishop of Canterbury to the present day. Until the 18th century Lambeth remained a sparsely populated rural area. The draining of Lambeth Marsh and the opening of Westminster Bridge (1750) and connecting roads to it saw Lambeth grow with residents working at the wharves and boatyards on the waterfront and in the new factories. The area was much damaged during the Second World War and has seen large-scale redevelopment since. The now redundant Church of St Mary-at-Lambeth has pre-Norman roots. The tower dates from the late 14th century. The ancient parish of Lambeth had a two -mile frontage on the Thames, including Vauxhall, and extended southwards to cover the contemporary districts of Brixton, West Dulwich and West Norwood. From 1900-1965, for local government purposes, the ancient parish was the basis of Lambeth metropolitan borough. The district is within the council area of Lambeth.
