Knocknagoney, Down

Knocknagoney is a former village that is now a suburban area to the north-east of Belfast, County Down. It is within the townland of Knocknagoney, in the civil parish of Holywood. At the start of the 19th century, a small hamlet stood along the main north-south road (now the Old Holywood Road) through Knocknagoney townland. The area also became a popular place for wealthy linen merchants and industrialists to build grand homes. Knocknagoney House was built in 1880 for the McCance family, on the site of an 18th century house (Clifton House). Richmond Lodge was built around 1798. From the mid 20th century, the estates of these houses were broken up for housing estates. The Church of the Annunciation (C of I), built in 1964, was designed by Desmond Hodges. The area is within the council area of Belfast.
