Knock, Down

Knock is a suburban area in east Belfast, County Down. It is within the townlands of Knock and Ballycloghan, in the civil parishes of Knockbreda and Holywood. The townland of Knock remained largely rural until the opening of Knock Station, originally Ballycloghan Halt, in 1850. From the mid 19th century it was developed as an exclusive neighbourhood and, from the early 20th century, as a residential suburb. Knock Cemetery is an ancient walled graveyard, the site of a former parish church, abandoned in 1737 for the church in Breda townland. The area is within the council area of Belfast.
