Knepp Castle, Sussex
Knepp Castle is a ruined mediæval castle near Shipley, Sussex. Knepp began as a motte castle, probably founded in the 12th century by William de Braose. King John confiscated the castle along with the Braose lands in 1208. The castle continued to be used into the 14th century, hosting reigning monarchs on several occasions, but then fell out of use. The castle stands on an oval mound, modelled from a natural feature, surrounded by a ditch and ramparts. The above-ground remains of the castle consist of a single 35ft high wall, which apparently formed one wall of a tower or keep. The monument is within the council area of Horsham (West Sussex).
