Knaresborough, Yorkshire
Knaresborough is an old and historic market town in Yorkshire, in the West Riding. It stands on the River Nidd. Knaresborough Castle dates from Norman times. Mother Shipton's Cave is the reputed birthplace of the legendary soothsayer. The early 13th century St Robert's Cave is a mediæval hermitage, cut out of the magnesian limestone river gorge with a domestic area externally and the Chapel of the Holy Cross which originally housed the saint's grave. The town is within the council area of North Yorkshire.
