Kirkby, Lancashire

Kirkby is a town in Lancashire. Kirby remained a village until the building of the Royal Ordnance Factory (ROF) Kirkby between 1939-1941. After the war, the ROF site became the Kirkby Industrial Estate and large-scale housing development saw a massive increase in population. St Chad's Church, in the old village centre, was built between 1869-1871, though on an ancient foundation. The town is within the council area of Knowsley.
