Kingswood is a town in Gloucestershire. The name derives from the King's Wood, a royal hunting estate which surrounded Bristol in Saxon times. By the late 17th century Kingwood had become a large coal-mining village. It also became a centre of Methodism with several chapels and schools. From 1895-1974, for local government purposes, it was the basis for Kingswood urban district, during which period it saw substantial development and effectively became a town. It is now contiguous with the Bristol urban area to its west. The town is within the council area of South Gloucestershire.
