Kingston Upon Thames, Surrey
Kingston Upon Thames is an ancient town in Surrey. Kingston was an important Saxon town, the earliest record from AD 838 names it as 'Cyninges tun'. According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, Æthelstan (925) and Æthelred the Unready (978) were crowned at Kingston. Several other kings are also said to have been crowned here. Kingston’s post-Norman significance owes much to its bridge, for a millenium the lowest Thames crossing except for London Bridge. The current Kingston Bridge dates from 1825. The town has had market since the 13th century. It was an important coaching town in the 18th century. The area around the old town became suburbanised in the 19th and 20th centuries. The town is within the council area of Kingston upon Thames.
