King's Norton, Worcestershire

King's Norton (or Kings Norton) is a suburban village in Worcestershire, forming a southern suburb of Birmingham. The manor was in royal hands from Domesday until 1804. During the civil war Queen Henrietta Maria is reputed to have spent a night in the Saracen's Head on The Green, her army camped behind St Nicolas' Church. The village expanded after the arrival of the Worcester and Birmingham Canal in 1796 and the opening of King's Norton railway station in 1849. The village became part of the municipal area of Birmingham in 1911 and has seen significant suburban development since then, though detains a distinct village identity. The village is within the council area of Birmingham.
