Kilrea is a small market town lying just west of the River Bann in County Londonderry. It is within the townland of Kilrea, in the civil parish of Kilrea. There is a tradition that St Patrick visited the area during the 5th century. During the Plantation, Kilrea and the surrounding townlands were granted to the Worshipful Company of Mercers by King James I for settlement. The town is centred on 'The Diamond' which includes the War Memorial. The First Kilrea Presbyterian Church, built to a design by William Barnes of London, opened for worship in 1839. Outside the church is the Fairy Thorn (a hawthorn tree), traditionally a popular place for people to make wishes. The town is within the council area of Causeway Coast and Glens.
