Killough, Down
Killough is a coastal village, lying on Killough Bay on the Lecale peninsula in County Down. It is within the townland of Killough, in the civil parish of Rathmullan. A harbour was built on the bay in the mid 18th century by the Ward family of Castle Ward house, near Strangford. Michael Ward named it 'Port St Anne' but the name did not stick, the growing village being known by the townland name. Major harbour improvements were made by Alexander Nimmo between 1821-1824. The village prospered and the grain merchants built their imposing houses in Castle Street, the sycamore avenue along which was planted in 1850. The village is within the council area of Newry, Mourne and Down.
