Kilkeel, Down

Kilkeel is a small town, lying on the Aughrim River where it joins the Kilkeel River and meets the sea, on the south coast of County Down. It is within the townlands of Magheramurphy and Kilkeel, in the civil parish of Kilkeel. The ruins of the 14th century church of St Colman Del Morne and its cemetery stand in a rath in the centre of the town. Kilkeel grew slowly from a small village to a town by the late 18th century. The Church of Christ the Redeemer (C of I) was consecrated in 1815. Mourne Presbyterian Church was completed in 1831, on a site used for worship since 1736. Kilkeel Harbour was developed from the 1850s and has grown to be a major fishing port. The town has seen massive expansion since the mid 20th century, joining the old town and harbour area. The town is within the council area of Newry, Mourne and Down.
