Kilburn, Middlesex
Kilburn is a former hamlet that is now an urban area to the south-west of Hampstead, in Middlesex. The hamlet developed along the Roman road Watling Street, split between the parishes of Willesden and Hampstead. The hamlet took its name from Kilburn Priory (c.1300-1537) which was built on the banks of Kilburn Brook. The area was built up following the opening of Kilburn railway station in 1852. The Gaumont State Cinema (1937), now a church, was designed in homage to the Empire State Building. The Red Lion Inn is claimed to date from 1444. The area is within the council areas of Brent and Camden.
