Kew, Surrey

Kew is a suburban town in Surrey. The Royal Botanic Gardens ("Kew Gardens") were formed by Henry Capell in the 16th century and enlarged and extended by Augusta, Dowager Princess of Wales around 1759. Kew Palace (1631) was a royal palace from 1728-1818. Many refuges from the French Revolution established themselves in Kew. The original village of Kew lies to the north of the gardens around Kew Green, where there are many historic houses. Substantial development to the south and east of the original village saw Kew grow to become a suburban town in the 20th century. The town is within the council area of Richmond upon Thames.
