Jervaulx Abbey is a ruined Cistercian abbey near East Witton, Lower Wensleydale, Yorkshire, in the North Riding. Jervaulx Abbey was originally founded at nearby Fors by a community of Savigniac monks. The community was re-established at the current site in 1156. Here the monks erected a new church and monastery, dedicated to St Mary. At the height of its prosperity the abbey owned half of the valley and was renowned for breeding horses. It was also the original home of Wensleydale cheese. Following the Dissolution the buildings were stripped of anything of value and the church blown up. The standing remains of the abbey include part of the church and claustral buildings and a watermill. It is within the council area of North Yorkshire.
