Jarrow, Durham
Jarrow is a town in County Durham, standing on the south bank of the River Tyne. Jarrow is famous as the location of the Monastery of St Paul, where Bede composed The Ecclesiastical History of the English People in the early 8th century. From the middle of the 19th century, Jarrow became a centre for shipbuilding. Jarrow is also famous as the starting point in 1936 of the Jarrow March to London to protest against unemployment. The town is within the council area of South Tyneside.
