Ivybridge, Devon
Ivybridge is a town lying on the River Erme in the south-west of Devon. The earliest reference to the settlement is from 1280, the name being derived from that of the 13th century packhorse bridge across the River Erme. From the 16th century, the River Erme powered mills, including corn, tin, and later paper mills. From the 18th century, Ivybridge became a major stop on the Plymouth to Exeter coaching route. The Ivy Bridge was widened during this period and the 'New Bridge' constructed downstream in the 1830s. The town is within the council area of South Hams (Devon).
