Islington, Middlesex
Islington is a former village and ancient parish that is now a metropolitan district in Middlesex, forming a northern suburb of London. Islington was a manor from Saxon times (referred to as 'Giseldone' in 1005), the later parish covering the area of the original manor even after sub-estates (e.g. Barnsbury, Highbury and Canonbury) were later formed. The Church of St Mary originated in the 12th century and was rebuilt in the 15th century. The village developed along the Great North Road from Aldersgate (the modern Upper Street) and along the Back Road (modern Liverpool Street), a drovers road on the route to Smithfield market. From 1900-1965, for local government purposes, the ancient parish was the basis for Islington metropolitan borough. Islington Town Hall (1930) was designed by Edward Charles Philip Monson in the neoclassical style. The district is within the council area of Islington.
