Isle of Dogs, Middlesex
The Isle of Dogs is a large peninsula bounded on three sides by a large meander in the River Thames, in the south-east of Middlesex. Traditionally it forms part of Poplar. The name dates back at least as far as the 16th century. The area began to be urbanised following the opening of the West India Docks in 1802. William Cubitt developed the south-eastern part of the peninsula in the 1850s. Shortly afterwards, Millwall docks opened – and related industries and dockworkers’ housing filled much of the western half. The area is within the council area of Tower Hamlets.
