Irlam, Lancashire

Irlam is a town in Lancashire, standing along the north bank of the River Irwell (now the Manchester Ship Canal). Until the later part of the 19th century, the area remained largely rural with the villages of Higher Irlam, Jenny Green and Lower Irlam. For local government purposes, the area became the basis of Irlam urban district from 1894-1974. The subsequent urbanisation of Irlam was closely linked to the Manchester Ship Canal. Irlam is now often regarded as a suburb of Salford. Irlam is within the council area of Salford.
