Ingliston, Midlothian
Ingliston is a historic estate located to the west of Edinburgh in Midlothian. The estate was known as Rattounraw until 1631, when the owner, James Inglis, changed the name to Ingliston. The estate comprised two farms and a mansion surrounded by park. By the turn of the 19th Century, the old house, which stood on what is now Ingliston Road, had fallen into disrepair and was uninhabitable. The existing Ingliston House was built in 1846 by William Mitchell-Innes, then owner of Ingliston Estate. It was around this time that the surrounding grounds were laid out as a natural-style, informal landscape. Since then, the estate has changed hands many times. From the 1930s it was used as a golf club until it was bought by the Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland. Subsequent development has given rise to a number of permanent exhibition halls and, for a time, a motor-racing circuit. The Royal Highland Centre now hosts a wide range of events. It is within the council area of City of Edinburgh.
