Ilminster is a historic market town located in the Isle Valley in southern Somerset. The town has Saxon origins, being awarded a charter in 995 by Ethelred. It is mentioned in Domesday as a possession of Muchelney Abbey. By the 17th century, the town had become a centre of cloth and glove making. The Church of St Mary's Church, built around 1450 on the site of a Saxon church, is a fine example of Somerset Perpendicular architecture in Hamstone. The colonnaded Market Cross dates from the 17th century. The town is within the council area of Somerset.
