Ilfracombe is a seaside resort and historic port situated on the north coast of Devon. The town is built around a natural harbour sheltered by the massive Hillsborough Hill, which features an Iron Age hillfort, and Lantern Hill, home to the 14th-century St Nicholas Chapel which has long also been a lighthouse. By the 13th century, Ilfracombe was a significant harbour of refuge in the Bristol Channel, engaging in trade and fishing. The 19th century saw Ilfracombe evolve into a prominent Victorian seaside resort, served by ferries along the Bristol Channel and, from 1874, the railway. The town is within the council area of North Devon (Devon).
