Ilford, Essex

Ilford (formerly Great Ilford) is a large town in Essex. It is first recorded in Domesday as 'Ilefort'. Historically a small rural village, Ilford's strategic position on the River Roding and the London to Colchester road caused it to develop as a coaching town. The arrival of the railway in 1839 accelerated its growth. It saw large-scale suburban development in the 20th century. From 1895-1965, for local government purposes, it was the basis of Ilford urban district, a municipal borough from 1926. Ilford is now a significant commercial and retail centre surrounded by extensive residential development. Valentines Mansion was built in 1696 for Lady Tillotson (widow of John Tillotson, Archbishop of Canterbury), its grounds now forming Valentines Park. The town is within the council area of Redbridge.
