Hyde, Hampshire

Hyde is an ancient suburb of Winchester, Hampshire. Hyde Abbey was built in 1109. The bones the remains of King Alfred the Great, his son, King Edward the Elder, and his wife, Ealhswith were carried in state through Winchester to be interred before the high altar. Following the Dissolution, these remains were lost. Today all that remains of the abbey is the gatehouse. Hyde is within the council area of Winchester (Hampshire).
